Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Intervention App
MTSS – Interventions
Our MTSS module enables districts and school sites to plan, run, and monitor Tier 1–3 interventions using student groups created in K‑12 Analytics (or SMART). Goals can be tied to DataZone measures (auto‑updated) or created as custom goals (manual updates).

Accessing the MTSS App
Once the MTSS module is officially released, you can open it from the DataZone landing page or from the Apps drop‑down menu.
Note: Our new MTSS module is in beta testing. If your district is interested in piloting the module early during this time, please reach out to the DataZone Engagement Manager assigned to your district. Your district will not lose pilot data once the MTSS module is officially released.
Landing Page (Interventions + Students)
The landing page has two sections:
Interventions
Filters:
All – all interventions the user can access
Planned – created but not started
In Progress – currently active
Completed – ended plus all prior‑year interventions
Each intervention card shows the following:
Header: The status, intervention name, and tier level.
Card Information: The left side of the card includes the number of students, the number of schools, start and end dates, the owner, the funding source, and the facilitators. The right side of the card includes the goals.
You can select “View Intervention” in the bottom-right corner to view the intervention details.
Students
Shows a list of students participating in interventions.
Selecting a student shows all interventions they’re in, goal progress, and a printable summary.
Create a Student Group (Prerequisite)
Create student groups in K‑12 Analytics (recommended) or SMART before starting an intervention.
Filter by school, grade, program, etc., then Create Student Group.
Groups are static. New students must be manually added via Manage Student Groups.
Recommended naming format: School-Grade-Focus-Identifier (E.g. Mars-2-ELA-EL).
To learn more about creating student groups, review this knowledge base: Cohort Management: Creating and Sharing Student Groups
Create an Intervention
Open MTSS → New Intervention.
Overview fields

Toggle District Level to indicate whether this intervention applies to all schools in the district.
Schools – Select the schools you would like to include in the intervention. Please note that this area is restricted to the schools listed as accessible to the owner.
Funding Sources – select one or more (managed by leaders/admins)

Tier change rules
Tier 1 → Tier 2/3: allowed
Tier 2 → Tier 1/3: not allowed if a student group is added
Tier 3 → Tier 1/2: not allowed if a student is added
The tier cannot be changed after the intervention has started.
Click Save to validate and save the intervention. After saving, define Goals.
Define Goals & Targets
Goals (DataZone measures)
Use pre‑defined measures (e.g., DIBELS scores, grades, attendance).
Targets must be numeric. Alphanumeric levels (e.g., composite levels) are not supported; use the numeric equivalent score.
Custom Goals
For measures not in DataZone (e.g., number of after‑school sessions).
Progress can be entered manually in Observations.
You can add multiple goals per intervention.
Facilitators & Participants
Facilitators
Staff who help record observations and manage progress.
If a person is missing, they may not have an active account or site access.
Participants
Tier 2: Add the student group owned by the intervention owner. A group cannot be used in multiple interventions and should include only students from the intervention site.
Tier 3: Add a single student.
Start the Intervention
After Goals, Facilitators, and Participants are set, click Start.
After starting:
Goals are locked (cannot be modified).
Participants cannot be removed, but a student’s participation status can be changed (Tier 2 groups can only add students).
Begin recording observations.
Progress Monitoring & Participation
Intervention Progress (log)
Enter the Observation Date
Update Progress Status (Exceeded Expectations, Met Expectations, Did Not Meet Expectations)
Update the notes for that session (e.g., no session due to assembly, fidelity, and dosage rationale).
Student Participation
Start and End Data are prefilled with intervention start and end dates, but you can change them.
Update participation status (e.g., Ongoing, Completed, Withdrawn, Declined, On Hold).
Update Participation Outcome (Exceeded Expectations, Met Expectations, Did Not Meet Expectations)
Enter notes that will apply to all the students in that intervention.
Check the Apply to all students checkbox, or select the students you want the notes applied to. Scroll to the bottom of the page and save your intervention.
Bulk Student Progress supported for observations across multiple students/goals.
Bulk Student Progress
Record student observations
Goal: Attendance %, ELA overall score, Reading accuracy
Enter the observation date
Enter progress status (Exceeded Expectations, Met Expectations, Did Not Meet Expectations)
View a Student’s Interventions
Use the Students view to open a student and view all interventions they are in, with progress for each goal.
A printable view is available for meetings and records. Right click and select Print to use the browser’s print function.
Funding Sources
Funding Sources can be created/managed by District or Site leaders (and administrators) under the Quick Links drop down menu.
Used for program tracking/reporting; includes an accounting string and allocation amount.
A funding source can be disabled for future use.
Intervention Administrator Report
Our new Intervention Administrator Report provides district and site leaders with a comprehensive, real‑time overview of all MTSS interventions across their schools. This report is designed to support monitoring, decision‑making, and follow‑up conversations with school teams. You can view this report directly within the MTSS App.
You can access the Administrator Report from the MTSS landing page:
Open the MTSS App from the DataZone landing page or Apps menu.
Navigate to the Interventions tab.
Click on the Reports button located on the far right of the top action bar.
The icon appears next to the New Intervention button.
This button is only visible for District Leaders (DW‑DISTRICT‑ACCESS) and Site Leaders (DW‑SITE‑ACCESS).
What the Intervention Administrator Report Shows
The report provides a high‑level summary of interventions by district or school, including:
1. Summary Metrics
Displayed at the top of the report:
Total students in each level of tiered intervention
Total interventions
Goal Met / Exceeded % for completed interventions
2. Students Receiving Interventions
Visual breakdown of students by Tier level (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 2 & 3 combinations).
Helpful for understanding where support structures are concentrated.
3. Intervention Breakdown by Tier & Area
A bar chart displays the number of interventions across:
Tier 1
Tier 2
Tier 3
You can toggle between:
By Tier
By Area (Academic, Attendance, Behavior, SEL, etc.)
4. Intervention Details by School
A detailed table shows:
School name
Total number of interventions
Student count
Count of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 interventions
This view supports cross‑school comparisons and helps leaders identify where additional support or follow‑up may be needed.
Permissions
