How to Use the Slicers (filters) in State/College Assessments
There are additional filters in the State Assessment dashboards. This article will provide you with information on what they mean and how best to use them.
Slicers
Aside from the standard filters on the left-hand side of the dashboard pages, State Assessments has two additional filters - technically called slicers. They allow you to slice the data by enrollment year and assessment year. Let’s break it down.
Select Your View (a.k.a Enrollment Year)
Select Your View allows you to pick the student roster or list of kids for which you would like to view data. Current Year Enrollment will include all students who are enrolled in your district during the current school year. Previous Years' Enrollment will include students who were enrolled in your district during each previous year going back at least 4 years.
Select Assessment Year(s) (Year Tested)
Select Assessment Year allows you to pick the year that the assessment was administered, also known as the testing year. This slicer drives what data you will see on the columns. If you select only one school year, you will see only one school year. If you select more than one school year, the chart will show several stacked bar graphs for each respective year.
Using the Slicers
When used TOGETHER, these slicers allow you to Look Back and Look Forward - examining how students you had in previous years performed so that you can reflect on instructional practices, systems and their impact, AND how students you currently have performed on a previous year assessment so that you can look ahead and identify areas of support needed in the near future. Current Year + Selected Assessment Year(s)
This combination of slicer will yield students who are CURRENTLY enrolled in your district/school and how they did on the assessment in previous years (this includes students who tested in your district and outside of your district). This slicer combo can assist in answering the question: How did my currently enrolled students do on this assessment in previous years? (Looking Forward)
For example, when Current Year Enrollment and Assessment Years 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 are selected, the chart will show:
students who are currently enrolled in your district and how they did on the assessment in the 2018-2019 as well as 2020-2021.
If your district has provided the enrolled district file, then students who tested outside of your district but are currently enrolled in your district will have scores and show up in this metric when this slicer combination is used.
Previous Year + Selected Assessment Year(s)
This combination of slicers will show students who were previously enrolled in your district and how they scored in each of the assessment years selected. This slicer combo can assist in answering the question: How did my previous students do on this assessment in each assessment year? (Looking Back)
For example, when selecting Previous Year and Assessment Years 2018-2019, the charts will show
Students who were enrolled in your district in the school year in 2018-2019 and who took the test in 2018-2019
This combination is as close to the State testing results as possible.
Slicer Combinations & Their Meaning
Learn what the slicer combinations mean…
Slicer Scenario #1: Previous Year + One Assessment Year
In this slicer combo, you are looking at students who were enrolled in your district during the 18-19 school year and took the test in the 18-19 school year.
Slicer Scenario #2: Previous Year + Two or More Assessment Years
In this slicer combo, you are looking at students who were enrolled in your district in 18-19 and their scores from the 18-19 SBA assessment as well as students who were enrolled in your district in 20-21 and their scores from the 20-21 SBA assessment.
Slicer Scenario #3: Current Year + One Assessment Year
In this slicer combo, you are looking at students who are currently enrolled in your district and how they did on the SBA assessment that was administered in 2020-2021.
Slicer Scenario #4: Current Year + Two or More Assessment Years
In this slicer combo, you are looking at currently enrolled students and how they did on the SBA assessment in each of the respective years. If they do not have a score for a year, they will not be included in the count.
