What is SEL?
Social Emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
DataZone’s SEL Survey
The DataZone team along with district leaders from our consortium worked to develop the SEL Survey instrument and accompanying analytics. DataZone's SEL Survey has been in use for over 4 years by districts from Santa Clara County, San Mateo County, and Napa County. SCCOE’s Research and Evaluation team used this data to validate the instrument, resulting in a 21 items SEL measure across 7 competencies along age-appropriate College & Career Readiness (CCR) items. The survey requires a response to all 21 items on the SEL survey for a student’s results to be calculated and reflected in the DataZone SEL dashboards.

Cost
The DataZone SEL Survey costs $0.50/student based on ADA district enrollment and is billed annually.
Survey Implementation
The survey can be administered up to two times per school year for students Grade 3 and above; the three available administration windows are listed below. Please let SCCOE staff (contact: ishacter@sccoe.org) know at least two weeks in advance of the launch.
With the survey being hosted by the SCCOE SEL app, districts no longer need to submit User Submission Forms (USFs) for students taking the surveys; all active students Grade 3 and above will be able to access the survey as dictated by their grade level-- Grades 3-5 Elementary, Grades 6-8 Middle, and Grades 9-12 High. During the implementation window, districts can inquire about participation rates up to once a week. Districts will receive step-by-step student login directions via email upon request.

Results & Visualizations
Survey results can be made available to a district in raw data format or via the DataZone Analytics dashboards.
Survey results that are published and made available for DataZone Analytics districts can be viewed in the Foundations dashboards under the SEL dashboards. Data is available in aggregate and at the student level. SEL survey scores are updated daily by 8:30am.
SEL Status shows student status for completion, in progress, and not started. Completion status is updated twice daily at 11:30am and 3:30pm.
